How Baseball Bats Are Brought From The Tree To The Diamond

What an exciting time to be a baseball fan! With the 2025 MLB Postseason underway, there is a lot of excitement all across Canada. This past Sunday, our nation’s team, the Toronto Blue Jays secured their spot as the American League East Division Champions. They await the winner of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox Wild Card Series this Saturday. That’s when the Jays kick off their playoff run in the American League Division Series.

We wish them the best of luck all throughout October, hoping they finally recapture the World Series championship for the first time since 1993. Now, of course, it goes without saying that the Jays won’t be able to win another title without bringing their big bats to the diamond. Have you ever wondered how bats are made?

Sourcing the wood comes first.


Wood bats are typically made from hardwoods such as maple, ash or birch. In Canada, one notable bat manufacturer is Sam Bat. Based in Ontario, this company supplies maple bats and is a licensed supplier for Major League Baseball. During the sourcing stage, the supplier selects high-grade logs, often choosing pieces with straight grain and consistent density.

Cutting into billets and seasoning or drying.


The logs are cut into billets which are rough rectangular or cylindrical blocks. Their dimensions are suited for bat turning. These billets are then dried, either naturally through air drying or in kilns, to reduce moisture. Proper moisture content is critical. If too much water is added, the bat may crack or warp. If too little water is added, it may become brittle.

Rough shaping or “turning”.


Once dried, the billet is mounted on a lathe. This is either manually controlled or computer-controlled. As it spins, tools remove excess material to form a blank with the rough bat profile. This includes the barrel, handle and knob of the bat. In some advanced shops, tracing systems match each blank to a precise bat model template to ensure consistency.

Cupping, fine tuning and sanding.


For some bats, the barrel end is cupped, meaning that it has a shallow hollow cut. This helps to shift weight distribution slightly toward the handle, improving balance. Next comes sanding to smooth the profile, bring it to exact dimensions and eliminate minor imperfections. This often requires multiple passes. The blank is measured with calipers or gauges. This ensures the barrel diameter, handle thickness and overall length match the model.

Quality control and grain alignment testing.


One specialized test in the industry is the “ink-dot test”. It is used by Sam Bat. This process involves a drop of ink that is placed on the bat. Its path is used to check how straight the grain is. If the grain deviates too much, that bat is rejected. Some factories also test structural integrity by firing baseballs at the bat with compressed-air cannons. They also use high-speed cameras or sensors to analyze impact behaviour. Bats that don’t pass inspection may be diverted to batting practice or “X-out” status. That means they are non-retail quality.

Branding, finish and packaging.


Once a bat passes quality control, it’s branded. The manufacturer adds logos, model names and player names among other details. Laser engraving or stamping is common. A protective clear coat or varnish is applied and the bat may be painted or stained if needed. After finishing, bats are dried, often packaged with desiccants to control humidity and shipped out!
