How Turntables Are Manufactured To Keep Your Tunes Spinning

In 2025, the vast majority of young music lovers take to their favourite streaming services in order to listen to their favourite songs. For long-time music enthusiasts, however, there’s nothing quite like spinning some vinyl to appreciate their all-time top tunes. In our last blog, we explored the production process of vinyl records. But, of course, records don’t play themselves. Naturally, record players a.k.a. turntables are necessary. So how are they manufactured?

The foundation of a turntable is the plinth.


Also known as the record player’s base, the plinth is generally made out of wood, acrylic or metal. It keeps the player stable and reduces vibrations. On top of the plinth sits the platter. This is the circular spinner which is often made from heavier materials such as aluminum or acrylic. A smooth, balanced platter is critical. Even the slightest wobble can affect playback quality. Supporting this is the centre spindle. This is the protruding part in the middle that holds the record while playing, preventing it from slipping.

Turntables use one of two drive systems: belt drive or direct drive. Belt drive models use a rubber belt to connect the motor to the platter. It helps to reduce motor noise. Direct drive systems place the motor directly beneath the platter. This offers stronger torque and speed stability, which DJs love.

The tonearm is another critical component.


The tonearm is what you lift and place directly on the vinyl record to play music. It must be lightweight, rigid and carefully balanced. This allows the stylus to track the grooves of a record. Many modern tonearms are made from aluminium or carbon fibre. At the end of the tonearm sits the headshell. This is where the cartridge is mounted. It is used to connect the cartridge and needle to the tonearm.

As explained by The Rings Of Vinyl, “the cartridge houses the stylus/needle inside it. The cartridge has a transducer which converts the mechanical movement of the needle into electrical signals. After that, the signals are sent to the amplifier and eventually to the speaker...The stylus or needle is the part which attaches to the cartridge and slides within the grooves of the record. As it slides, it sends the vibrations to the cartridge which eventually converts them into electrical signals.”

Electronics also play a key role in turntable manufacturing.


Speed control circuits, power supplies and sometimes built-in preamps are assembled onto printed circuit boards. These boards are manufactured using automated processes like pick-and-place machines and reflow soldering. This is followed by thorough testing to ensure stable performance. From there, sub-assemblies like the motor, tonearm and platter are brought together for final assembly.

Before a turntable leaves the factory, it goes through rigorous testing. Manufacturers check speed accuracy, vibration levels and tonearm tracking to make sure the player performs exactly as intended. Cosmetic details are added last before the turntable is carefully packaged for shipping. They include dust covers, knobs and branding.
