Taking A Look At How Jewellery Is Made

Behind every ring, bracelet or pair of earrings is a blend of art, precision engineering and quality control. With Valentine’s Day being an occasion when a lot of jewellery is offered as loving gifts, we thought you might like to explore each step of the jewellery manufacturing process.
Every great piece starts as an idea.
Jewellery designers transform an initial inspiration into a precise Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model. This digital design phase involves defining exact dimensions, material properties, tolerance limits and stone placements. Engineers and artists work together to balance aesthetics with manufacturability, anticipating how the piece will behave when it’s actually made. A great design reduces surprises down the line and ensures the finished product feels comfortable and durable.
Once the CAD model is ready, a physical prototype is often created using 3D printing or skilled wax carving. With it, designers can check proportions, fit and feel. If adjustments are needed, they’re made here before anything goes into production tooling. This early physical validation saves time and cost later on.
Casting is where metal meets form.
The prototype is used to create a mould, often through a process called lost-wax casting. This is where a wax model is surrounded by a heat-resistant material and the wax is melted out. Molten metal is then poured in. At this stage, you need consistent temperatures, proper metal flow and minimal defects. This step transforms the design from concept into a solid shape you can hold.
Once the metal cools and the mould is removed, the raw casting still needs work. Skilled artisans remove excess material, smooth rough edges and refine the shape. This is a combination of handwork and precision tooling. For multi-piece designs or those requiring stones, components are assembled at this stage.
Stone setting is one of the most meticulous parts of jewellery making.
It involves securing gemstones in place without damaging them. There are many techniques used such as prong, bezel, pave and channel. Each must be chosen based on the design and type of stone. Setters need a steady hand, a deep understanding of materials and an eye for symmetry. A well set stone improves both beauty and wearability.
Next comes polishing, where the surface is refined to its final shine. This process removes tiny imperfections and enhances aesthetic appeal. Different finishes include high gloss, matte and satin. They are applied based on design intent. Some jewellery pieces also receive plating, such as rhodium over white gold, to enhance colour and corrosion resistance. A strong finish protects the piece and makes it feel luxurious.
Final inspection is critical.
Each piece is checked for dimensional accuracy, surface quality, strength and fit. This built-in quality control prevents weak points, loose stones or finish defects. The goal is that when the jewellery arrives in the hands of a loved one, it is ready to be worn and treasured for years.
