The Fascinating Process Of Basketball Manufacturing

It all starts with the inner bladder.
At the core of every basketball is a rubber bladder. It’s what holds the air and gives the ball its bounce. This inner layer is usually made of butyl rubber, which is known for its durability and ability to retain air pressure. Without this foundation, a basketball wouldn’t have the responsiveness players need for dribbling, passing and shooting.
Then come the carcass and the lining.
Wrapped around the bladder is the carcass. It’s made up of layers of nylon or polyester fabric that add strength and maintain the ball’s shape. These reinforcements are essential because basketballs undergo constant impact during games and practice. The balance of flexibility and firmness is what allows a ball to keep its roundness after hours of play.
The outer cover is next.
The most recognizable part of the basketball is its outer surface. Professional balls, like those used in the NBA, are made of genuine leather. It softens and improves grip with use. Other basketballs may use composite leather or rubber, depending on whether they’re meant for indoor or outdoor play. The panels are carefully cut, glued and stitched around the carcass. This creates the classic look of eight segments separated by black channels.
Testing, inspection and packaging come last.
Once assembled and inflated, each ball undergoes quality testing. Manufacturers check for proper weight, balance, bounce and air retention. The ball is then branded with logos, ensuring it meets the standards of the league or level of play it’s intended for. “The finished balls are about 29.5 inches in circumference and also weigh between 20-21 ounces,” informs Mark Marlon of EverLighten, “Lastly, the balls are inflated and put aside for 24 hours to inspect their air-retention.”
Marlon points out that basketballs are tested to ensure they bounce to a certain height. “When you drop the ball from 72 inches, it should rebound up to 52 to 56 inches,” he explains, “Other minor details like artwork and decals are tested. Extra glue between the panels is removed. After checking the custom basketball totally, it is packed in a polyethylene bag or boxed in packaging to send out to a distributor.”
