The Story Behind The Creation Of Every Pair Of Kicks

Who doesn’t love rocking a cool pair of sneakers? Also known as gym shoes, running shoes or “kicks”, these comfortable members of the footwear family are a staple in everyday life across Canada and the world. They’re used for sports, work and casual wear. While they may seem simple on the surface, manufacturing a quality sneaker is a complex, multi-stage process that combines thoughtful design, advanced materials and precise production techniques.

It all begins with design and concept development.


Designers start by creating sketches and digital renderings that define the sneaker’s appearance, purpose and performance features. Comfort, durability, style and intended use all play a role in shaping the final design. These concepts are refined into detailed technical specifications that guide material selection and production methods.

Once the design is approved, manufacturers source the necessary materials. Sneakers are made from multiple components, each serving a specific function. Uppers are commonly produced from leather, knit fabrics, mesh or synthetic textiles for breathability and flexibility. Midsoles are often made from EVA or polyurethane foam to provide cushioning and shock absorption. Outsoles use rubber compounds for traction and durability.

Approved materials are then cut into precise shapes.


The shapes are based on patterns that are developed during the design phase. Automated cutting machines are frequently used to improve efficiency and reduce material waste, although skilled technicians still monitor the process. Each sneaker may contain dozens of individual pieces. They must all meet exact measurements to ensure proper assembly and fit .

“The pattern parts for the shoe are made into steel cutting dies,” explains Shoemakers Academy, “A cutting die is required for every part and every size.  Each shoe part is cut from rolls of fabric or from leather hides.  Fabric parts may be layered so many can be cut at the same time.  Leather parts must be cut one by one to avoid having scars or other imperfections in the leather show on the final product.”

Shoes are shaped using a process known as lasting.


The upper is stretched over a foot-shaped mould called a last. This gives the sneaker its final shape. The midsole and outsole are then attached, typically using industrial adhesives, heat and pressure. In some cases, soles are moulded directly onto the upper for added strength. This step has a significant impact on comfort, performance and longevity.

Before sneakers are approved for sale, they undergo strict quality control inspections. Manufacturers check stitching, alignment, sizing, bonding strength and overall appearance. Any defects are corrected or removed from the production line. This attention to detail ensures customers receive consistent, high-quality products that perform as intended. After passing inspection, sneakers are cleaned, laced, boxed and prepared for distribution.
